Summary

Fallugia paradoxa, commonly known as Apache Plume, is a deciduous or semi-deciduous shrub native to the arid and semi-arid regions, including chaparral, pinyon-juniper woodlands, and desert scrub areas of the Southwestern USA and Northern Mexico. This plant typically grows to a height of 3-6 feet (0.9-1.8 meters) and spreads 4-8 feet (1.2-2.4 meters) wide. Apache Plume has a distinctive appearance with its light gray or whitish exfoliating bark on thin branches and small, oval, green, and hairy leaves. The flowers, which bloom from spring to fall, are particularly showy with their roselike form, rounded white petals, and a center full of numerous thready stamens and pistils. After flowering, the plant is adorned with dark pinkish clusters of curling, feathery styles that aid in seed dispersal by wind.

Apache Plume is valued for its drought tolerance, low maintenance, and erosion control properties, making it an excellent choice for xeriscaping and naturalistic plantings in arid landscapes. It is also used for wildlife gardens as it provides nectar for wasps and other pollinators. While it thrives in part shade, Apache Plume can also tolerate full sun, especially in cooler climates. It requires minimal water once established and prefers well-drained soils. Gardeners should note that while it is generally disease-free, it can occasionally suffer from root rot in poorly drained soils.CC BY-SA 4.0
