Summary

Feijoa sellowiana, commonly known as Pineapple Guava or simply Feijoa, is an evergreen shrub or small tree in the myrtle family, Myrtaceae. It is native to the highlands of southern Brazil, eastern Paraguay, Uruguay, northern Argentina, and Colombia, where it thrives in subtropical climates with cool winters and mild summers. Typically, Feijoa sellowiana reaches a height of 1–7 meters (3.3–23.0 ft). The plant features gray-green leaves with a silvery underside and bears attractive, edible flowers with fleshy white and red petals. The flowers bloom in spring and are followed by the unique, green, ellipsoid fruit, which matures in autumn. The fruit is notable for its sweet, aromatic flavor reminiscent of pineapple, apple, and mint, and its flesh is divided into a clear, gelatinous seed pulp and a firmer, granular flesh near the skin.

Feijoa sellowiana is valued for its ornamental qualities, delicious fruit, and relatively low maintenance. It is often used in gardens for hedging, as a specimen plant, or in large containers. The fruit drops when ripe, but can be harvested from the tree to avoid bruising. This species is adaptable to a range of soil types, provided they have good drainage, and it prefers full sun to part shade. While drought and salt tolerant, regular watering during fruit maturation is important. Feijoa can be sensitive to extreme temperatures, requiring winter chilling for fruiting, yet vulnerable to frost and high summer heat. Pruning encourages new growth, which is essential for fruit production.CC BY-SA 4.0
