Ferocactus viridescens, commonly known as San Diego Barrel Cactus, is an evergreen succulent native to the coastal sage scrub and chaparral of Southern California and Baja California in Northwest Mexico. It is a slow-growing plant that typically reaches a height and width of 1-2 feet (0.3-0.6 meters). The cactus has a cylindrical form with bright green flesh, segmented into several vertical ribs. These ribs are adorned with arrays of long spines that are initially red and fade to gray or tan as they age. During the late spring to summer, it produces showy yellow to greenish flowers with red or pink scales at the top of the plant, followed by yellow or red fruit.

The San Diego Barrel Cactus is valued for its drought tolerance and unique appearance, making it a suitable choice for xeriscaping, rock gardens, and as a specimen plant in areas with Mediterranean climates. It requires minimal maintenance once established. This cactus should be planted in well-draining soil to prevent root rot and needs full sun exposure to thrive. Overwatering and poor drainage are common issues that can lead to disease. It is also important to handle with care due to its sharp spines.
