Summary

Festuca glauca, commonly known as blue fescue, is an evergreen or semi-evergreen perennial herb native to coastal and inland regions of Spain, France and Italy, often found in rocky outcrops and grasslands. It forms a compact, dome-shaped tuft of blue-gray, needle-like foliage, with each blade featuring nine distinct ribs and reaching lengths of 140–180 mm. The light green flowers with a purple tinge are borne in terminal panicles above the foliage in late spring to early summer, though they are not particularly showy. Following flowering, the plant produces wheat-like seed heads. Blue fescue typically grows to a height of 14–18 cm (6–7 in), with flower stalks increasing the overall height to 20–25 cm (8–10 in).

Blue fescue is valued for its drought tolerance, low maintenance, and striking blue-gray foliage, which adds color contrast in garden designs. It is commonly used in rock gardens, as a border plant, or for mass ground cover. This grass prefers full sun to maintain its best color but can tolerate light shade. It requires well-drained soil and can endure dry, low-nutrient conditions. While it can survive drought and neglect, regular watering is preferred. Pruning back to 40 mm above ground level in winter helps remove dead leaves, and division of clumps is recommended every 2–3 years to rejuvenate the plant. In hot, humid climates, the foliage may decline, and weeds can be problematic when used as ground cover, requiring manual removal.CC BY-SA 4.0
