Estimated Native Range
Summary
Festuca microstachys, commonly known as small fescue, is a perennial grass native to the grasslands and open woodlands of western North America, including California’s Central Valley and the Pacific Northwest. It typically grows up to 2 feet in height and has a bunching habit, forming tufts of fine, blue-green leaves. Small fescue blooms in late spring to early summer, producing inconspicuous, greenish-brown flower spikes that are not particularly showy. This species is well-adapted to a Mediterranean climate, characterized by wet winters and dry summers.
Small fescue is valued for its drought tolerance and ability to thrive in poor soils, making it an excellent choice for restoration projects and erosion control. It is also used in low-water landscaping and as a turf alternative in areas with dry climates. In cultivation, small fescue requires minimal maintenance, needing only occasional watering once established and tolerating a range of soil types, though it prefers well-drained soils. It can grow in full sun to partial shade. While generally disease-resistant, it can be susceptible to rust in wet conditions. Small fescue is not known for aggressive roots or significant pest problems. It is not typically invasive when grown outside its native range, but gardeners should always check local guidelines as conditions can vary.CC BY-SA 4.0
