Summary
Ficus coronata, commonly known as Sandpaper Fig or Creek Sandpaper Fig, is a small evergreen tree native to the coastal rainforests and moist eucalypt forests of eastern Australia, from Mackay in Queensland, through New South Wales to Victoria. It typically grows to a height of up to 39 feet (12 meters) and is often found along riverbanks, gullies, and in the understory of open forests where it contributes to the ecological diversity. The tree is characterized by its rough, sandpapery leaves which are oval-shaped and can reach up to 4 inches (10 cm) in length. The hairy oval fruits, which are edible figs, ripen to a purple-black color and are an important food source for wildlife.
The Sandpaper Fig is valued for its hardiness and adaptability, making it suitable for cultivation in shady gardens and as an indoor plant. Its ability to attract birds and its use in bonsai make it a versatile choice for gardeners. In cultivation, it prefers well-drained soils, moderate water, and can tolerate a range of light conditions from full sun to part shade. While it is not commonly afflicted by serious diseases, root rot can occur in poorly drained soils.CC BY-SA 4.0
