Estimated Native Range
Summary
Freycinetia arborea, commonly known as Ie’Ie, is an evergreen perennial vine native to the rainforests and cloud forests of the Pacific Islands, including Hawaii, and New Caledonia. It can climb to heights of 40-60 feet with a spread of 12-18 feet, using aerial roots to attach itself to trees and other structures. The plant features long, strap-like leaves that form dense, bushy clusters, providing a lush, tropical appearance. Ie’Ie produces small, inconspicuous flowers surrounded by brightly colored, leaf-like bracts that are orange and pink, giving the impression of a year-round floral display.
Ie’Ie is valued for its ornamental foliage and unique flowering bracts, which add a tropical flair to landscapes. It is suitable for growing on trellises, arbors, and as a cover for fences in warm climates. This vine thrives in humid conditions and requires consistently moist soil, though it is adaptable to various soil types with medium drainage. It prefers a position with full sun to part shade and benefits from regular watering, especially during dry periods. While generally pest-free, it can be susceptible to scale insects and mealybugs. Ie’Ie is not known for being invasive but should be monitored to ensure it does not overtake other plants in the garden.CC BY-SA 4.0
