Estimated Native Range
Summary
Fritillaria persica, commonly known as Persian Lily, is a deciduous perennial bulb native to rocky slopes and among scrub in the Middle East, particularly in Lebanon, Iran, and Turkey. It typically grows 30–60 cm (12–24 in) tall and is noted for its striking, conical, narrow, bell-shaped flowers. Each plant can bear up to 30 flowers, each up to 0.75 in (1.9 cm) long, with colors ranging from deep purple to greenish brown, blooming in the spring. The foliage is glaucous, providing a beautiful contrast to the dark flowers.
Persian Lily is valued for its unique flower color and architectural form, making it a standout in borders and rock gardens. It is also suitable for naturalizing in a meadow setting. The cultivar ’Adiyaman’ is particularly notable for being taller and more free-flowering than the species found in its native range, and it has received the Royal Horticultural Society’s Award of Garden Merit. Persian Lily requires well-drained soil and can tolerate drought once established, but it benefits from medium water when in growth. It is susceptible to bulb rot if kept too wet. Planting in a sheltered location can protect the tall stems from strong winds.CC BY-SA 4.0
