Summary

Fuchsia magellanica, commonly known as Hardy Fuchsia, is a deciduous perennial shrub native to the cool temperate rainforests and the Andean cloud forests of Southern Chile and Argentina. It can reach up to 10 feet (3.0 m) in height and width in frost-free climates, and typically 4–5 feet (1.2–1.5 m) in regions with colder temperatures. Hardy Fuchsia is characterized by its slender, arching branches and small, tubular, pendent flowers that bloom from summer to fall. The flowers come in a variety of colors, including brilliant shades of red and purple, softer shades of pink and lavender, and occasionally white. The flowers are particularly showy and attract hummingbirds, which are drawn to the nectar.

Hardy Fuchsia is valued for its long flowering period and its ability to attract wildlife. It is used in temperate and subtropical gardens, as well as conservatories, and is suitable for container planting on patios, balconies, and even indoors. This plant is adaptable to a range of light conditions but prefers a sunny position. It is relatively cold-hardy, remaining deciduous in light frosts and only experiencing top dieback in harder frosts with appropriate mulching. For optimal growth, it requires medium amounts of water and can tolerate soils with slow, medium, or fast drainage. While Hardy Fuchsia is a popular ornamental plant, it can become invasive in some regions outside its native range, so gardeners should check local guidelines before planting.CC BY-SA 4.0
