Summary
Furcraea selloa, commonly known as Wild Sisal, is an evergreen succulent plant native to dry rocky slopes and arid regions from Colombia to Ecuador. It can grow to a height of 8-10 feet (2.4-3 meters) and a width of 5-6 feet (1.5-1.8 meters). This plant has a bold architectural form with a rosette of long, sword-shaped leaves that can add dramatic effect to the landscape. The leaves are fibrous and were historically used for making ropes and twine. It blooms with greenish-white flowers on tall spikes that can reach up to 20 feet (6 meters) in height during the spring and summer months, although flowering is infrequent and plants often die after blooming, a trait known as monocarpic.
Wild Sisal is drought-tolerant and requires minimal maintenance, making it suitable for xeriscaping and as a focal point in water-wise gardens. It is also used in large containers and as an accent in tropical-themed landscapes. It thrives in full sun to part shade and prefers well-draining soil. While it tolerates a range of soil types, it is particularly important to avoid waterlogged conditions to prevent root rot. There are no major disease or pest issues, but it can be sensitive to cold temperatures and may require protection in cooler climates.CC BY-SA 4.0
