Estimated Native Range
Summary
Gaillardia aestivalis, commonly known as Lanceleaf Blanketflower, is a deciduous perennial herb native to open woodlands, grasslands, and prairies in the Southeastern United States. This species typically reaches heights of around 60 centimeters (2 feet) and is known for its rhizomatous growth, which allows it to spread and form clumps. The leaves are alternately arranged, variable in shape, and can be up to 6 centimeters (2.4 inches) long, with the upper leaves sometimes clasping the stem. The flower heads are composed of several layers of phyllaries, with 6 to 12 ray florets that can be purplish, yellowish, or whitish, although some plants may not have any ray florets. The center of the flower head contains numerous disc florets, which also vary in color. The fruit is an achene, sometimes reaching a centimeter in length, including its pappus of scales.
Lanceleaf Blanketflower is valued for its vibrant and variable-colored flowers, which bloom from late spring to early fall, adding long-lasting color to gardens. It is often used in wildflower gardens, borders, and as a ground cover due to its spreading habit. This plant is drought-tolerant, making it suitable for xeriscaping and low-water-use gardens. It thrives in full sun and requires well-drained soil with medium to fast drainage. While generally low-maintenance, it can be susceptible to powdery mildew and should be monitored for this disease.CC BY-SA 4.0
