Summary
Gaillardia arizonica, commonly known as Arizona blanketflower, is an annual herbaceous plant belonging to the sunflower family. It is native to desert grasslands and sandy soils in the Southwestern United States and northwestern Mexico. This species typically grows up to 40 cm (16 in) tall and is characterized by a basal rosette of leaves with flower stalks rising above. Each stalk supports a single flower head, which can be up to 35 cm (14 in) long. The flower heads feature 10–16 ray flowers that are yellow or orange, encircling a center of 40–100 yellow disc flowers. The Arizona blanketflower blooms from late spring through summer, offering a long season of color with its showy flowers.
The Arizona blanketflower is valued for its drought tolerance and vibrant, daisy-like blooms that attract pollinators such as bees and butterflies. It is well-suited for xeriscaping, rock gardens, and wildflower meadows where its low water requirements and ability to thrive in poor, well-drained soils are advantageous. It is also used for cut flowers due to its long stems and colorful blossoms. While it prefers full sun, it can tolerate some light shade. Overwatering or poorly drained soils can lead to root rot, so careful attention to watering is necessary.CC BY-SA 4.0
