Summary
Gambelia speciosa, commonly known as Showy Island Snapdragon or Showy Greenbright, is a perennial shrub endemic to the coastal sage scrub and chaparral habitats on the Channel Islands of Southern California and on Guadalupe Island west of the Baja California Peninsula in Mexico. It is a member of the Plantaginaceae family and is listed as an endangered species on the California Native Plant Society Inventory of Rare and Endangered Plants of California. This plant typically grows to a height of 3-4 feet (0.9-1.2 meters) and spreads to a width of 3-5 feet (0.9-1.5 meters). It has a bushy form with glossy green leaves and produces tubular, bright red to orange flowers that bloom from spring to fall, which are highly attractive to hummingbirds and other pollinators.
Showy Island Snapdragon is valued for its vibrant flowers and its ability to thrive in dry conditions, making it an excellent choice for native plant gardens, drought-tolerant landscapes, and wildlife gardens. It is also suitable for coastal gardens due to its salt tolerance. While it prefers full sun, it can tolerate part shade and requires well-drained soil. Once established, it has very low water needs, making it a low-maintenance option for gardeners. It is not known to have significant disease problems, but it can be sensitive to overwatering and poor drainage.CC BY-SA 4.0
