Estimated Native Range
Summary
Garrya veatchii, commonly known as Canyon Silktassel, is an evergreen shrub or small tree native to the chaparral and mixed evergreen forests of California and Northwest Mexico. It typically grows to a height of 2 meters (6.6 ft) but can occasionally reach up to 4 meters (13 ft). The plant has a bushy form with thick, leathery, oval-shaped leaves that are 3 to 9 centimeters long and about half as wide. The leaf margins can be flat, wavy, or slightly rolled, with undersides ranging from thinly to thickly covered in woolly hairs. Canyon Silktassel is dioecious, with male and female flowers on separate plants. It produces long, hanging inflorescences of light-colored flowers in the winter, which are particularly showy on male plants. Female plants give way to hanging clusters of fruits, which are spherical to egg-shaped berries covered in a soft coat of hairs.
Canyon Silktassel is valued for its attractive foliage, winter flowers, and ability to thrive with minimal care. It is used in gardens for its ornamental qualities, as a screen or hedge, and in naturalistic plantings. It is drought-tolerant once established, making it suitable for xeriscaping. The plant prefers full sun to part shade and does best in well-drained soils. While it is generally low-maintenance, it can be susceptible to scale insects and fungal diseases if grown in conditions that are too moist or humid.CC BY-SA 4.0
