Estimated Native Range
Summary
Genista sagittalis, commonly known as Arrow Broom or Winged Broom, is a deciduous shrub native to a variety of habitats including open woodlands, grasslands, and rocky areas in central and southern Europe, Ukraine, and Anatolia. It typically grows to a height of 0.3-0.6 meters and spreads to 0.5-1 meter wide. The plant is characterized by its small, bright yellow flowers that bloom in late spring to early summer, providing a showy display. The flowers are arranged in dense clusters and are highly attractive to bees. The stems are green and distinctly winged, adding to the plant’s ornamental value.
Arrow Broom is valued for its drought tolerance and ability to thrive in poor, well-drained soils, making it a suitable choice for rock gardens, xeriscaping, and restoration projects. It is also used as a low hedge or ground cover in garden borders. In cultivation, it requires full sun and minimal maintenance once established. While it generally resists pests and diseases, it can be susceptible to root rot in overly moist conditions. The subspecies Genista sagittalis subsp. delphinensis, known as Rock Broom, has been recognized with the Royal Horticultural Society’s Award of Garden Merit for its garden performance.CC BY-SA 4.0
