Summary

Gentianella amarella subsp. acuta, commonly known as Felwort, is a perennial herb native to Siberia to N. China, Subarctic America to N. Mexico. It typically grows to a height of up to 30 cm and is characterized by its vibrant purple, cup-shaped flowers that bloom from late summer to autumn, adding a splash of color to the landscape during these seasons. The plant has a basal rosette of leaves from which erect flowering stems arise, each bearing a few pairs of opposite leaves.

Felwort is valued for its striking purple flowers and is often used in alpine and rock gardens where its low-growing habit and late-season blooms can be appreciated. It is also suitable for border planting in cottage gardens. This species thrives in full sun and requires well-drained, calcareous soils to perform well. While it is relatively low maintenance, it can be susceptible to root rot in poorly drained conditions. Felwort is not known for aggressive roots or significant disease problems, making it a desirable addition to many garden settings. It is also a good choice for attracting pollinators such as bees and butterflies.CC BY-SA 4.0
