Summary
Geranium delavayi, commonly known as Chinese Cranesbill, is a perennial herb native to the mountainous regions and alpine meadows of South-Central China. It typically grows to a height of 1-3 feet (0.3-0.9 meters) and a width of 1-2 feet (0.3-0.6 meters). This species forms a mound of deeply cut, green foliage that becomes reddish in fall, providing extended seasonal interest. The striking flowers are deep maroon or purple with prominent veining, blooming profusely in late spring to early summer and sporadically thereafter, adding a splash of color to garden borders.
Chinese Cranesbill is valued for its long flowering period and its ability to fill in gaps among other plants, making it an excellent ground cover or border plant. It is also appreciated for its low maintenance requirements and tolerance of a range of soil conditions, though it prefers moist, well-drained soil. It can be grown in full sun to part shade, with part shade being preferable in hotter climates to prevent scorching. While generally disease-resistant, it can occasionally suffer from rust or leaf spot. This geranium is not known for being invasive and does not have aggressive roots, making it a safe choice for most garden settings.CC BY-SA 4.0
