Estimated Native Range
Summary
Geranium incanum, commonly known as Carpet Geranium, is an evergreen perennial herb native to the open grasslands and scrublands of South Africa. It typically grows to a height of 0.5-0.7 feet (0.15-0.2 meters) and a width of 0.8-1 feet (0.24-0.3 meters), forming a dense mat of foliage. The leaves are deeply cut and fern-like, providing textural interest even when the plant is not in bloom. Carpet Geranium produces an abundance of small, magenta to pale pink flowers with veined petals throughout the spring, summer, and fall, which are particularly showy against the dark green foliage.
This plant is valued for its long flowering season and low-growing, spreading habit, making it an excellent ground cover. It is also drought-tolerant once established, which makes it suitable for xeriscaping and water-wise gardens. Carpet Geranium is used in rock gardens, as a border front, or in containers where its trailing habit can be appreciated. It prefers well-drained soil and can tolerate a range of soil types, from sandy to loamy. While it can grow in part shade, flowering is best in full sun. It is generally pest-free but can be susceptible to rust in humid conditions.CC BY-SA 4.0
