Summary
Geranium richardsonii, commonly known as Richardson’s Geranium, is a deciduous perennial herb native to the mountainous regions and alpine zones of the Western United States and Canada, often found in moist meadows, forest clearings, and along stream banks. It typically grows from 20 to 80 centimeters in height and spreads through a tough, woody taproot and rhizomes, forming clumps. The leaves are deeply lobed, and the plant produces showy flowers with five pointed sepals beneath five rounded petals, each one to two centimeters long. The petals range from white to purple with pronounced darker purple veining, blooming from late spring to early summer.
Richardson’s Geranium is appreciated for its delicate flowers and its ability to attract pollinators such as bees and butterflies. It is used in wildflower gardens, borders, and naturalized areas. This geranium requires consistent moisture and can tolerate a range of light conditions, from full sun to partial shade, making it versatile for various garden settings. It thrives in soils with medium to slow drainage. While generally low-maintenance, it can be susceptible to rust and leaf spot diseases.CC BY-SA 4.0
