Estimated Native Range
Summary
Geum fragarioides, commonly known as Appalachian Barren Strawberry, is an evergreen perennial herb native to open woodlands and rocky slopes in Eastern North America. It typically grows to a height of 0.3-0.5 feet (0.09-0.2 meters) and spreads 0.5-1 feet (0.2-0.3 meters), forming a low, dense ground cover. The plant features trifoliate leaves resembling those of a strawberry plant, and it produces bright yellow, five-petaled flowers in the spring that are modest in size but can add a cheerful note to the garden. The flowers are followed by inedible, dry, strawberry-like fruits.
Appalachian Barren Strawberry is valued for its ground-covering ability, evergreen foliage, and spring flowers. It is often used as an underplanting in perennial gardens, woodland gardens, and naturalized areas. It is also suitable for rock gardens due to its tolerance of rocky, well-drained soils. While it prefers full sun to part shade, it is adaptable to a range of light conditions and requires medium water with well-drained soil. This species is not known for serious pest or disease problems, making it a low-maintenance choice for gardeners.CC BY-SA 4.0
