Summary
Geum macrophyllum, commonly known as Largeleaf Avens or Large-leaved Avens, is a perennial herb that is part of the rose family. It is native to a variety of habitats including moist meadows, stream banks, and forest clearings across North America, from the Arctic regions south to the northern United States, extending through the Rocky Mountains to the Sierra Nevada in California and reaching Northwestern Mexico. This plant typically grows to a height of 16-35 inches (40-90 cm) and spreads 12-24 inches (30-60 cm). Largeleaf Avens has a basal rosette of large, hairy leaves and produces small, yellow flowers from late spring to early summer. The flowers are not particularly showy, but the distinctive spiky spheres of reddish styles that form the fruit are visually interesting. The fruits are a ball of tiny velcro-like hooks that catch on clothing and animal fur, aiding in seed dispersal.
Largeleaf Avens is valued for its naturalistic appearance and is often used in native plant gardens, restoration projects, and informal borders. It is a low-maintenance plant that can tolerate a range of conditions, but it thrives in moist, well-drained soils and can adapt to full sun or part shade. While it is not prone to serious diseases or pests, it can suffer from root rot if planted in poorly drained soils. This species is not typically invasive but can spread through self-seeding if conditions are favorable.CC BY-SA 4.0
