Summary
Gillenia stipulata, commonly known as American Ipecac, is a deciduous perennial herb native to open woodlands and prairie margins in the Central and Eastern USA. It typically grows to a height of 2-3 feet (0.6-0.9 meters) and a similar width, forming a bushy clump. The plant features deeply lobed leaves and bears delicate, star-shaped flowers with five narrow petals, which are white tinged with pink, blooming in early to mid-summer. The flowers are quite showy and attract pollinators such as bees and butterflies.
American Ipecac is valued for its airy appearance and the charming contrast between its foliage and the subtle coloration of its flowers. It is often used in border plantings, native plant gardens, and as part of pollinator-friendly landscapes. It thrives in well-drained soil, rich in organic matter, and prefers a balance of full sun to partial shade. While it is not a heavy feeder, an annual application of compost can promote healthier growth. It is generally low-maintenance and is not known to suffer from serious pest or disease problems. However, it may require staking in very rich soils or partial shade conditions, as it can grow leggy.CC BY-SA 4.0
