Summary
Glandularia gooddingii, commonly known as Southwestern Mock Vervain, is an evergreen perennial herb native to desert scrub, grasslands, and open areas in the Southwestern United States and Northern Mexico. It typically grows to a height of 6-12 inches (15-30 cm) and spreads 12-18 inches (30-45 cm). The plant is characterized by its dense, head-like spikes of many small flowers, each with a hairy calyx of sepals and a corolla of pale purple-blue that can be up to 1.4 centimeters long, blooming from late spring to early fall. The flowers are particularly attractive to butterflies and hummingbirds.
Southwestern Mock Vervain is valued for its long flowering season and its ability to attract pollinators. It is often used in xeriscaping, as a ground cover, in rock gardens, and in borders due to its low water requirements and tolerance of poor, well-drained soils. It thrives in full sun and can handle the intense heat of its native range. While it is generally low-maintenance, it can be susceptible to root rot if overwatered. Deadheading spent flowers can encourage a longer blooming period.CC BY-SA 4.0
