Estimated Native Range
Summary
Glyceria borealis, commonly known as Small Floating Mannagrass, is a deciduous perennial grass native to wetlands, including marshes, wet meadows, and riparian zones across the United States and Canada. It typically grows with a tall and slender stem, often exceeding a meter in height when erect, and can bend, lie flat on the ground, or float in the water of ponds and streams. The plant features narrow, lance-shaped leaves and produces inconspicuous greenish flowers during the summer months.
Small Floating Mannagrass is valued for its ability to stabilize soil and filter water in wetland restoration projects. It is also used ornamentally in water gardens and naturalized areas where its foliage provides texture and movement. This grass thrives in full sun but can tolerate partial shade, and it requires consistently moist to wet soil conditions, making it suitable for planting along pond edges or in rain gardens. While it is not typically troubled by pests or diseases, it can become invasive in some regions outside its native range, so caution is advised when planting in such areas.CC BY-SA 4.0
