Estimated Native Range
Summary
Gmelina arborea, commonly known as Beechwood or White Teak, is a fast-growing deciduous tree native to the moist deciduous forests, often along riverbanks and in mixed hardwood forests of India, Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, and southern China. It is found at altitudes up to 4921 feet (1500 meters). The tree can grow up to 98 feet (30 meters) tall with a trunk diameter of up to 31 inches (80 centimeters), and it features a straight bole with smooth, pale bark. The leaves are large, heart-shaped, and the tree produces yellowish-white flowers that are modest in appearance but have a pleasant aroma. Flowering typically occurs from March to April. The fruit is a small drupe that turns yellow when ripe.
Beechwood is valued for its lightweight and durable timber, which is used in furniture, plywood, and musical instruments. It is also used in reforestation projects and as an ornamental tree in tropical and subtropical regions due to its rapid growth and attractive foliage. In cultivation, Gmelina arborea prefers full sun to partial shade, requires moderate water, and thrives in well-drained soils. It is relatively easy to maintain and is resistant to most pests and diseases. However, it can become invasive outside its native range, so it is essential to consult local regulations before planting.CC BY-SA 4.0
