Summary

Grevillea arenaria, commonly known as Sand Grevillea, is an evergreen shrub native to sandy soils in open eucalypt forests and heathlands in New South Wales, Australia. This species is part of the Proteaceae family and is known for its adaptability to poor soils and exposed sites. It typically grows to a height of 0.3–4 m (1 ft 0 in – 13 ft 1 in) with a similar spread, forming a dense and bushy habit. The leaves of Sand Grevillea are distinctive, being elliptic to egg-shaped with the narrower end towards the base, measuring 15–75 mm (0.59–2.95 in) in length and 3–15 mm (0.12–0.59 in) wide, with edges turned down or rolled under, giving them a unique texture.

The plant is highly valued for its vibrant and showy flowers, which come in shades of red, pink, or orange, and are arranged in groups of two to six on short side branches. These flowers are particularly hairy and are a highlight during their peak in spring, although they can be present in most months. Sand Grevillea is drought-tolerant and suitable for xeriscaping, making it an excellent choice for low-water gardens and native plantings. It thrives in full sun and well-drained soils, and it is often used as a feature shrub, for screening, or in mixed borders. While it is generally low-maintenance, it can be susceptible to root rot in poorly drained soils and may attract pests such as aphids. It is also important to note that Grevillea species can be sensitive to phosphorus; therefore, fertilizers for native plants should be used.CC BY-SA 4.0
