Estimated Native Range
Summary
Grevillea aspleniifolia, commonly known as Fern-Leaved Grevillea, is an evergreen shrub or small tree native to the open eucalypt forests and woodland margins of New South Wales, Australia. It typically grows to 1–5 m (3 ft 3 in – 16 ft 5 in) in height and up to 5 m (16 ft) in width, with a spreading habit. The plant’s foliage is distinctive, with linear to narrowly egg-shaped leaves that resemble fern fronds, hence the common name. The purplish-red flowers are spider-like, blooming mainly from July to November, and are quite showy, attracting nectar-feeding birds. The fruit is a hairy follicle 11–12 mm (0.43–0.47 in) long, containing seeds that are dispersed by wind.
Fern-Leaved Grevillea is valued for its fast growth, hardiness, and the ornamental quality of its fern-like foliage and vibrant flowers. It is often used in gardens for screening, as a specimen plant, or in native plantings. This species is adaptable to a range of soil types but requires good drainage. It thrives in full sun and requires medium amounts of water once established. While it is generally low-maintenance, it can be susceptible to root rot in poorly drained soils. Pruning after flowering can encourage a denser growth habit and more prolific blooming in the following season.CC BY-SA 4.0
