Estimated Native Range
Summary
Grevillea baileyana, commonly known as White Oak, is an evergreen tree native to the wet tropics of northeastern Queensland, Australia, and Papua New Guinea. It is not to be confused with the true oaks of the genus Quercus. Grevillea baileyana typically reaches a height of 8 to 10 meters (25–35 ft) in cultivation, though it can grow up to 30 meters (100 ft) in its natural rainforest habitat. The tree features hard, scaly grey bark and dense, dark green foliage. Its flowerheads, which are greenish in bud, bloom in spring and summer (August to December) and turn white upon maturity, releasing a pleasant fragrance.
The White Oak is valued for its showy, fragrant flowers and lush foliage, making it a popular choice for tropical and subtropical gardens. It is also used as a shade tree or ornamental specimen. The tree prefers a compost-rich, acidic soil with good drainage and can tolerate a range of light conditions from full sun to part shade. It is relatively low-maintenance but may require patience in temperate regions, as it can take years to flower. Grevillea baileyana is long-lived in cultivation and generally requires low amounts of water once established.CC BY-SA 4.0
