Summary

Grevillea preissii, commonly known as Sea Spray, is a dense, erect shrub native to sandy or gravelly soils in coastal heathlands and open woodlands of the southwest of Western Australia. It typically grows to a height of 1 to 4 feet and features woolly or shaggy-hairy branchlets. This member of the Proteaceae family is known for its striking flowers, which come in shades of red, orange-red, or pinkish-red and are arranged in groups of 12 to 30 along one side of the flowering rachis. The flowering season extends from May to October, and the plant produces an oval follicle as fruit.

Grevillea preissii is valued for its vibrant flowers and compact growth habit, making it an excellent choice for rockeries, coastal gardens, and as a low hedge or ground cover in cultivation. It thrives in well-drained soils, tolerates drought once established, and prefers full sun to light shade. While it is generally low-maintenance, it benefits from occasional pruning to maintain its shape and promote denser foliage. Gardeners should be aware that it can be sensitive to phosphorus; thus, fertilizers formulated for native Australian plants are recommended.CC BY-SA 4.0
