Summary

Guardiola platyphylla, commonly known as Apache Plant, is an evergreen perennial herb native to the semi-arid grasslands and open woodlands of the Southwestern USA and Northwest Mexico. This plant typically grows up to 100 cm (39 in) tall and features a branching habit. Its leaves are opposite, thick, and leathery, reaching up to 7 cm (2.8 in) long. During its flowering season, which occurs in late spring to early summer, the Apache Plant produces several flat-topped arrays of flower heads. Each head showcases 1-5 white ray flowers encircling 3-20 white disc flowers, offering a modest display of blooms.

The Apache Plant is valued for its drought tolerance and its ability to thrive in challenging environments, making it suitable for xeriscaping and naturalistic plantings in arid regions. It is also used in border plantings and as a low-maintenance ground cover. In cultivation, it prefers part shade to full shade, requiring medium amounts of water and well-drained soils. While it is not commonly found in nurseries, it can be a unique addition to a native plant garden or a garden that focuses on water conservation.CC BY-SA 4.0
