Summary

Gymnosporia heterophylla, commonly known as the common spike-thorn, is a hardy, deciduous shrub or small tree native to a variety of habitats including rocky outcrops, open woodlands, and bushveld in Africa. It is found across Ethiopia, Sudan, Congo, Cape Province, Angola, Namibia, Madagascar, and Saint Helena. Gymnosporia heterophylla typically grows up to 16 feet tall and is characterized by its straggly, rigid habit with sharp straight thorns and deeply fissured grey-brown bark. The plant is dioecious, with separate male and female plants, and produces clusters of small, fetid, white flowers in spring. These flowers, although not visually showy, are significant for their ecological role in attracting carrion-loving flies for pollination. The tree also has a symbiotic relationship with certain cicada species, such as Platypleura divisa and P. mijburghi.

The common spike-thorn is valued for its hard and durable wood, which is suitable for carving and crafting. Additionally, it is often used to create fast-growing security hedges due to its dense growth and formidable thorns. In cultivation, it requires minimal maintenance and can tolerate a range of soil types, provided they are well-drained. It is drought-resistant once established and can thrive in full sun to partial shade. While it is not commonly afflicted by serious diseases or pests, its thorns can make it difficult to handle and prune.CC BY-SA 4.0
