Estimated Native Range
Summary
Hakea carinata, commonly known as Carinate Hakea, is an evergreen shrub native to the dry sclerophyll forests and scrub-heath communities of southern South Australia, including the Flinders Range and the Mount Lofty Ranges, with isolated populations around Padthaway. It typically grows 5 to 10 feet tall and is characterized by its flexible, smooth, flat leaves and narrowly oblong fruits. The shrub blooms in spring, producing clusters of 8-24 cream-white flowers in the leaf axils, which are modest in showiness but attract native pollinators.
Carinate Hakea is valued for its hardiness and adaptability to poor soils, making it a suitable choice for xeriscaping and native plant gardens. It is often used to provide texture and interest in low-maintenance landscapes. In cultivation, it requires well-drained sandy to loamy soils and thrives in full sun to part shade. While it is drought-tolerant once established, it benefits from occasional watering during prolonged dry periods. This species is relatively free of serious pests and diseases, but gardeners should be aware of potential root rot in poorly drained soils.CC BY-SA 4.0
