Estimated Native Range
Summary
Hakea ceratophylla, commonly known as Horned-Leaf Hakea, is an evergreen shrub native to the sandy and rocky soils of open woodlands and coastal heathlands in Southwestern Australia. It is a stiff, multi-stemmed shrub that typically grows to a height of 0.5 to 2 meters (1.6 to 6.6 ft). The leaves of Hakea ceratophylla are distinctive, with variably-shaped, often deeply lobed foliage that can resemble horns, hence the common name. During the flowering season, which occurs in late winter to spring, it produces clusters of small, creamy-white flowers that are covered in white or rusty-colored hairs, giving them a woolly appearance. These flowers are moderately showy and are followed by woody seed pods.
Horned-Leaf Hakea is valued for its unique foliage and textural interest, making it a suitable choice for xeriscaping and native plant gardens. It is drought-tolerant and thrives in full sun to part shade, requiring low amounts of water once established. The plant prefers well-drained soils, tolerating both sandy and rocky substrates. It is often used as a feature shrub in rockeries or as part of a mixed border. While generally low-maintenance, it can be susceptible to root rot if overwatered or planted in poorly draining soils.CC BY-SA 4.0
