Estimated Native Range
Summary
Hakea francisiana, commonly known as Grass-Leaf Hakea, is an evergreen shrub or small tree native to the sandplains and coastal heaths of Western and South Australia. It typically grows to a height of 3 to 8 meters (9.8 to 26.2 ft) with a V-shaped canopy and rough bark. The plant is characterized by its long, narrow leaves and its striking pink-red flowers, which bloom from July to October. The flowers are particularly showy, appearing in large racemes up to 10 centimeters (3.9 in) long, and are a significant source of nectar for birds and bees during the winter and spring months.
Grass-Leaf Hakea is valued for its ornamental appeal, especially its vibrant flowers and open habit that can add texture to garden landscapes. It is also appreciated for its wildlife benefits, providing habitat and food for pollinators. This plant is drought-tolerant, lime-tolerant, and can withstand moderate to light frost, making it a low-maintenance option for gardeners. It is often used in ornamental plantings, as a windbreak, or for erosion control. For optimal growth, it requires full sun exposure and well-drained soils. While it needs minimal watering once established, it may benefit from occasional deep watering during prolonged dry periods. Grafting onto hardier rootstock is sometimes employed to improve its resilience.CC BY-SA 4.0
