Estimated Native Range
Summary
Hakea gibbosa, commonly known as Hairy Hakea, is an evergreen shrub native to the sclerophyll forests and coastal scrublands of New South Wales, Australia. It typically grows to a height of 0.9–3 m (2 ft 11 in – 9 ft 10 in) and may present a bushy or slender form. The species does not form a lignotuber. Hairy Hakea is characterized by its prickly foliage, with new growth and leaves thickly covered in fine brown hairs that become smooth with age. The cream-yellowish flowers bloom from April to July and are moderately showy, attracting pollinators and providing shelter for small birds. Its fruit is a woody follicle that adds interest to the plant outside of its flowering season.
Hairy Hakea is valued for its adaptability to cultivation, ease of growth with good drainage, and full sun exposure. Its prickly foliage can be a deterrent, making it less suitable for high-traffic areas, but it can serve as an effective barrier or hedge. It requires low to medium amounts of water and thrives in soils with fast drainage. While it is easy to grow, gardeners should be cautious as it has become an environmental weed in South Africa and New Zealand, where it was introduced as a hedge plant.CC BY-SA 4.0
