Estimated Native Range
Summary
Hakea laurina, commonly known as Pin-Cushion Hakea, is an evergreen shrub or small tree native to the sandplains and coastal heaths of Southwestern Australia. It typically grows to 2.5–6.0 m (8 ft 2 in – 19 ft 8 in) in height and 3–5 m (9.8–16.4 ft) in width. The plant features smooth grey bark and is notable for its red and cream conspicuous globular flowers that resemble pin cushions, hence the common name. The lance-shaped leaves are slightly blue-green, flat, smooth, with entire margins, and taper to a blunt point at the tip. Flowering occurs from April to July, with the flower buds being enclosed in scale-like bracts before blooming.
Pin-Cushion Hakea is valued for its unique and showy flowers, which add ornamental appeal to gardens and landscapes. It is used in cultivation for hedging, street planting, and as a specimen tree in the eastern states of Australia, as well as in America and Italy. This species is also appreciated for its ability to provide shade, create wildlife habitat, serve as a windbreak, and control soil erosion. It is drought-tolerant and adaptable to various soil types, including those with medium or fast drainage. While it thrives in full sun, it can also tolerate frost, making it a versatile choice for gardeners. In the language of flowers, Hakea laurina symbolises nobility and longevity. However, gardeners should be aware that the plant can produce a large number of seeds, which may lead to unwanted spread in some areas.CC BY-SA 4.0
