Summary
Hamamelis ×intermedia, commonly known as Hybrid Witchhazel, is a deciduous shrub that is the result of an artificial cross between Hamamelis japonica and Hamamelis mollis. This hybrid typically grows to 4 meters (13 feet) in both height and width, featuring distinctive zig-zagging stems and alternate, simple leaves that are 15 cm (6 inches) long. The foliage turns a clear yellow in autumn, adding seasonal interest to the garden. Its unique flowers, which can be yellow, orange, or red with ribbon-like, twisted petals, are particularly notable for their ability to bloom on bare stems from midwinter through early spring, providing color and fragrance during a time when few other plants flower.
Hybrid Witchhazel is valued for its winter-blooming flowers, which are highly showy and can bring a splash of color to the garden during the colder months. It is commonly used in border plantings, as a specimen, and in woodland gardens. This plant prefers full sun to part shade and requires consistent moisture, thriving in soils with medium drainage. While it is generally easy to maintain, it can be susceptible to leaf spots and occasional powdery mildew. Gardeners should also be aware that it may require pruning to maintain a desired shape and to remove any suckers.CC BY-SA 4.0
