Estimated Native Range
Summary
Hamamelis vernalis, commonly known as Ozark Witchhazel, is a deciduous shrub native to the understory of moist, deciduous forests in the Ozark Plateau of Arkansas, Missouri, and Oklahoma. It typically grows to about 4 meters (13 feet) tall and wide, with a rounded form. The flowers are deep to bright red, or occasionally yellow, with four ribbon-shaped petals 7–10 mm (0.28–0.39 in) long and four short stamens, blooming in clusters. Flowering begins in mid-winter and continues until early spring, making it one of the few plants to bloom during this time.
Ozark Witchhazel is appreciated for its fragrant, spider-like flowers that provide color and scent in the late winter garden when few other plants are active. It is used in residential landscapes for winter interest, as a foundation planting, or in naturalized woodland gardens. It prefers partial shade but can tolerate full sun if provided with sufficient moisture. The plant thrives in acidic to neutral soils with good drainage. While generally low-maintenance, it can be susceptible to leaf spots and occasional powdery mildew. It is not known for aggressive roots or significant disease problems.CC BY-SA 4.0
