Summary
Handroanthus impetiginosum, commonly known as Pink Lapacho or Pink Trumpet Tree, is a semi-deciduous tree native to a variety of habitats including the cerrado and pantanal ecosystems, as well as dry deciduous forests in Central and South America. It is the national tree of Paraguay. This species can grow to a height of 30 meters (98 feet) with a trunk diameter of up to 80 cm (31 inches), and it often has a large, globular, but sparse canopy. The Pink Lapacho has a slow growth rate and is notable for its striking display of large, pink to purple, tubular flowers that bloom between July and September in the southern hemisphere, often before the new foliage emerges.
The Pink Lapacho’s flowers are a highlight in cultivation, attracting pollinators and providing a spectacular display when few other trees are in bloom. It is used in urban landscaping, as a specimen tree, and for reforestation projects due to its hardiness and drought tolerance. While it thrives in full sun and requires low amounts of water, it is adaptable to soils with medium drainage. Gardeners should be aware that it may take several years to flower when grown from seed. Despite its beauty, it can be susceptible to fungal diseases in conditions of high humidity.CC BY-SA 4.0
