Estimated Native Range
Summary
Haworthiopsis attenuata, commonly known as zebra haworthia, is a perennial succulent native to the rocky outcrops and dry river valleys of the Eastern Cape Province in South Africa. This plant typically forms star-shaped rosettes 2-5 inches in diameter. The leaves are dark green with horizontal white ridges that resemble zebra stripes, giving it its common name. The leaves are thick and fleshy, adapted to store water, and feature prominent white tubercles on both surfaces. Zebra haworthia blooms in spring, producing small, tubular, white or pinkish flowers on slender stalks that are not particularly showy compared to the foliage.
Zebra haworthia is valued for its striking leaf patterns and ease of care, making it a favorite among houseplant enthusiasts. It is often used in container plantings, rock gardens, and as a desk plant due to its small size and low maintenance requirements. It thrives in well-draining soil and bright, indirect light, but it is susceptible to root rot if overwatered. Direct sunlight can scorch the leaves, so it’s best to avoid placing it in full sun. This species has a slow to moderate growth rate and can be propagated easily from offsets. While generally pest-free, it can occasionally be affected by mealybugs or aphids.CC BY-SA 4.0
