Summary

Haworthiopsis reinwardtii, commonly known as Zebra Wart, is an evergreen succulent native to the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa, where it thrives in rocky outcrops and shrubby, arid environments. This plant typically grows to about 20 cm (8 in) in height and features a basal rosette of fleshy, dark green leaves adorned with white tubercles that give it a distinctive zebra-striped appearance. The leaves are arranged in a spiral pattern, contributing to its ornamental appeal. In spring, Haworthiopsis reinwardtii produces racemes of tubular, pinkish-white flowers that are moderately showy. The plant spreads to form a dense mat through freely-produced offsets, which are also used for easy propagation.

Zebra Wart is valued for its unique, textured foliage and its ability to form attractive clumps, making it a popular choice for rock gardens, succulent collections, and as a ground cover in xeriscapes. It is also well-suited for container cultivation, especially in temperate regions where it must be protected from cold temperatures. The plant has earned the Royal Horticultural Society’s Award of Garden Merit, indicating its exceptional performance in gardens. For optimal growth, Zebra Wart requires very well-drained soil, some exposure to sun, and minimal watering, as it is drought-tolerant. It is generally pest-free but can be susceptible to root rot if overwatered.CC BY-SA 4.0
