Summary

Hedera helix, commonly known as English Ivy, is an evergreen vine native to forest margins, woodlands, and rocky areas across most of Europe and parts of western Asia. It often climbs on walls, fences, and tree trunks in its native habitat. This species can reach a height of 20-30 feet (6-9 meters) when supported. English Ivy has dark green, lobed leaves and small, inconspicuous greenish-yellow flowers in late summer to fall, followed by blackish berries. Its dense foliage provides excellent cover for birds and insects.

English Ivy is valued for its ability to cover unsightly structures, control erosion, and provide year-round greenery. It is commonly used for ground cover, wall covering, and in topiary gardens. While adaptable to a range of conditions, it prefers moist, well-drained soil and can grow in full sun to full shade. It is important to manage its growth to prevent it from becoming invasive, as it can damage structures and outcompete native vegetation.CC BY-SA 4.0
