Summary

Hedera nepalensis, commonly known as Himalayan Ivy, is an evergreen perennial vine native to montane forests, forest edges, and valleys in South Asia and Southeast Asia, including regions of Nepal, India, and China. It can climb up to 30 meters in height using aerial rootlets to adhere to surfaces. The leaves of Himalayan Ivy are dark green, glossy, and heart-shaped, typically ranging from 2–15 cm in length. Its small yellow-green flowers are not particularly showy and bloom from October to April, followed by black, berry-like fruits that are attractive to birds.

Himalayan Ivy is valued for its ability to cover ground quickly, creating a dense carpet of foliage that can suppress weeds. It is also used as an ornamental climber on walls, trellises, and trees. In cultivation, it prefers moist, well-drained soils and can tolerate a range of light conditions from full sun to deep shade. However, it requires protection from strong winds. This ivy is relatively low-maintenance but can become invasive outside its native range, so gardeners should consult local regulations before planting.CC BY-SA 4.0
