Estimated Native Range
Summary
Helianthella californica, commonly known as California helianthella, is a perennial herb that is native to the chaparral, open woodlands, and dry slopes of the Sierra Nevada and Coast Ranges in California, extending to northwestern Nevada and southwestern Oregon. It typically grows to about 2 feet tall and is characterized by its erect stems and taprooted system. The inflorescence bears one or more flower heads that resemble small sunflowers, with bright yellow ray florets surrounding a central disc of darker yellow to brownish florets. The flowering season is from late spring to early summer, and the flowers are quite showy, attracting pollinators such as bees and butterflies.
California helianthella is appreciated for its bright, cheerful flowers and its ability to thrive in dry, challenging conditions, making it suitable for native plant gardens, xeriscaping, and restoration projects. It is often used to add color and height to wildflower meadows and borders. This plant prefers full sun to light shade and requires well-drained soil. It is drought-tolerant once established, making it a low-maintenance choice for gardeners in its native range. While generally disease-free, it can be susceptible to root rot if overwatered or planted in poorly drained soils.CC BY-SA 4.0
