Estimated Native Range
Summary
Helianthemum cinereum, commonly known as Common Rockrose, is an evergreen shrub native to the rocky, scrubby hillsides and coastal areas of the Western Mediterranean, including parts of Spain, France, Italy and North Africa. It typically grows to a height of 0.5-1 feet (0.2-0.3 meters) and spreads 2-3 feet (0.6-0.9 meters) wide. The plant forms a low, mounding habit with small, gray-green leaves and produces a profusion of bright yellow, saucer-shaped flowers in the late spring and early summer, which are particularly showy against the foliage.
Common Rockrose is valued for its drought tolerance and ability to thrive in poor, well-drained soils, making it an excellent choice for rock gardens, xeriscaping, and coastal landscapes. It is also used as ground cover or in border plantings where its evergreen foliage and vibrant flowers can be appreciated. While it prefers full sun, it can tolerate light shade and requires minimal water once established. It is not known for any significant disease or pest issues, but it can suffer from root rot if planted in poorly drained soils. There are no widely recognized cultivars of this species, but its natural form is well-suited to cultivation in Mediterranean climates or similar conditions.CC BY-SA 4.0
