Summary
Helianthus angustifolius, commonly known as Narrowleaf Sunflower or Swamp Sunflower, is a perennial herb native to a variety of habitats including moist to wet, open sunny areas such as marshes, wet pine flatwoods, and savannas in the south-central and eastern United States. It is found in all coastal states from Texas to Long Island and inland as far as Missouri. This species typically grows up to 59 inches tall and features long, narrow leaves with bright yellow flowers that bloom in the late summer to fall. The flowers are quite showy, with a central disk of dark purple to brown florets surrounded by bright yellow ray florets.
The Swamp Sunflower is valued for its vibrant, long-lasting blooms and its ability to thrive in wet conditions, making it an excellent choice for rain gardens, wetland plantings, and naturalized areas. It is also used in borders and as cut flowers due to its tall stature and striking flowers. This plant prefers full sun but can tolerate light shade and requires moist to wet soil with good drainage. While it is generally easy to maintain, it can spread aggressively by rhizomes and may require management to keep it within bounds. It is resistant to most pests and diseases but can be susceptible to rust and mildew in humid conditions.CC BY-SA 4.0
