Summary
Helianthus argophyllus, commonly known as Silverleaf Sunflower, is an annual herb native to sandy soils along the Gulf Coast and in the South Texas Plains in the Southeastern United States. It can reach a towering height of up to 300 cm (10 feet), with leaves and stems that have a distinctive silvery appearance due to a dense covering of fine hairs. The Silverleaf Sunflower blooms in late summer to fall, producing 1-5 striking yellow flower heads per plant, each with 15–20 ray florets encircling 150 or more disc florets, which are highly attractive to pollinators.
This plant is valued for its tall stature and silvery foliage, which can add texture and contrast to garden settings. It is often used in wildflower gardens, as a background plant in borders, or for naturalistic plantings. Silverleaf Sunflower thrives in full sun and requires medium amounts of water, preferring well-drained sandy soils. While it is generally easy to grow, it can be susceptible to powdery mildew and other fungal diseases in humid conditions. It is not known for aggressive roots or significant pest problems. Gardeners should be aware that it can self-seed prolifically and may require management to prevent unwanted spread.CC BY-SA 4.0
