Summary

Hedychium coronarium, commonly known as white ginger lily or crêpe ginger, is a perennial herb that is native to moist and shaded areas of the Himalayas in India, Nepal, and Bhutan, as well as forest margins in southeast Asia into Indonesia. It is often found in areas with high humidity and along stream banks. This species can reach a height of 3-7 feet (1-2 meters) with a spread of 2-3 feet (0.6-0.9 meters). The plant features lance-shaped leaves and very showy, fragrant white flowers that resemble butterflies, blooming from summer to fall. The flowers are borne in dense spikes and are often used in perfumery and lei making due to their scent.

White ginger lily is valued for its striking appearance and fragrance, making it a popular choice for tropical and subtropical gardens. It is used as a specimen plant, in mass plantings, and for naturalizing in suitable climates. It thrives in moist, well-drained soils rich in organic matter and prefers partial shade but can tolerate full sun if kept adequately watered. While it is relatively low maintenance, it can spread aggressively via rhizomes in ideal conditions. In cultivation, it may be susceptible to root rot if overwatered or planted in poorly drained soils.CC BY-SA 4.0
