Estimated Native Range
Summary
Hemizonia congesta, commonly known as Hayfield Tarweed, is an annual herb that is native to the grasslands and open areas of California and Oregon in western North America. It typically grows to a height of 4-31 inches with glandular, sticky stems and narrow leaves. The plant is characterized by its inflorescences, which are covered in glandular hairs and bear daisy-like flower heads with bright yellow centers and yellow or white ray florets. The flowering season is from late spring to early fall, and the flowers are quite showy, attracting a variety of pollinators.
Hayfield Tarweed is valued for its drought tolerance and ability to thrive in poor soils, making it a suitable choice for restoration projects and naturalized areas. It is often found in wildflower mixes for meadows and is used to provide a natural, low-maintenance display in gardens. This plant prefers full sun and requires little water once established, making it an excellent choice for xeriscaping. While it is not commonly afflicted by diseases, it can become weedy if conditions allow it to self-seed prolifically.CC BY-SA 4.0
