Summary

Hesperaloe tenuifolia, commonly known as Red Yucca or Grassy Hesperaloe, is an evergreen succulent native to the Chihuahuan desert in Texas and northeastern Mexico. It typically grows to a height and width of 2-3 feet (0.6-0.9 meters), forming clumps of narrow, leathery, blue-green leaves. The plant produces tall spikes of tubular flowers that are usually red but can also be coral or pink, blooming from early summer into fall. These flowers are quite showy and attract hummingbirds and other pollinators.

Red Yucca is valued for its drought tolerance, low maintenance requirements, and striking flower spikes that add a vertical element to landscapes. It is commonly used in xeriscaping, rock gardens, and as an accent plant in borders or container gardens. Red Yucca thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers well-drained soils, making it an excellent choice for gardeners dealing with arid conditions. While generally pest and disease-free, it can occasionally suffer from root rot if overwatered. It is also important to note that despite its common name, Red Yucca is not a true yucca and is more closely related to agaves.CC BY-SA 4.0
